Police Collaboration

ALLMI has provided a bespoke course for the Commercial Vehicle team of the Hampshire and Thames Valley Roads Policing Unit.

Based on the Association’s Thorough Examiner for Managers training, the tailored programme was delivered by ALLMI’s Technical Manager, Keith Silvester, who comments “The course focussed heavily on the requirements of LOLER, links to the BS 7121 series and all road-related items such as stabiliser locks and stabiliser and crane not-stowed warning systems. It also included a practical session, which involved demonstrating safety systems, explaining how they should function, and discussing the identification of defects or signs of deliberate override.”

Paul Diamond, Commercial Vehicle Unit and Force Hazmat Advisor for Hampshire and Thames Valley Police, comments “The training was excellent, comprehensively covering the safe stowage of lorry loaders and the legalities surrounding this topic. The course content has enabled us to further improve the quality of our roadside examinations for this type of equipment, thereby enhancing road user safety and positively impacting industry good practice.”

National Commercial Vehicle Practitioners Forum

ALLMI’s collaboration with the UK’s Road Policing Units has subsequently continued, with Keith Silvester recently presenting to the National Commercial Vehicle Practitioners Forum.  The event saw Commercial Vehicle Practitioners from 37 Police Forces coming together to discuss issues such as load security, hazardous materials, drivers’ hours and licencing.

Paul Diamond, who organised the event, comments “Keith’s contribution was greatly appreciated.  After providing an overview of lorry loader and attachment types, he covered various topics linked to safe travel, including crane design and safety system requirements, thorough examinations, Standards and legislation. He also referenced several case studies concerning incidents on this subject that helped to illustrate the points being made, and I’ve no doubt the information he shared will lead to more informed roadside examinations for this type of equipment.”

Keith Silvester adds “It was a pleasure to attend the Forum and to engage with an audience tasked with enforcing such an important area of road safety.  Following the event, we have received contact from several Forces interested in working with ALLMI and so we look forward to further developing this collaboration.”
